The Great Visionary

Saint Joseph Manyanet

He dedicated his life to transforming society by renewing families in the image of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Through schools, parishes, and spiritual centers, he formed hearts to love God and one another in everyday life.

A Journey to Heaven

1833: Modest Origins

Born into a devout family on January 7 in Tremp, Spain, Josep Manyanet was baptized that very same day. When he was only five, his mother’s deep faith led her to consecrate him to the Virgin Mary, setting him on a sacred path defined by divine purpose and a lifetime of service to the Church.

1859: A Sacred Design

He worked hard to fund his education with the Piarists and at major seminaries. Ordained on April 9, 1859, he served his diocese for twelve years before feeling a profound calling to establish two religious communities dedicated to supporting the spiritual needs of modern Christian families.

1864: Apostle of the Home and Schools

In 1864, he founded the Sons of the Holy Family, followed by the Missionary Daughters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1874. Their shared mission is to spread the spirit of Nazareth through Catholic education, helping youth discover their identity within a community that welcomes all of God's children.

1901: A Life Complete

Despite enduring chronic illness, Josep Manyanet remained devoted to God's will. He passed away on December 17, 1901, in Barcelona, with the prayer: “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, may I rest in peace with you.” His life remains a model of devotion, proving that true holiness is found in everyday moments lived with joy.

A Heart for Wisdom

Saint Joseph Manyanet shared the Gospel through inspiring preaching and writing. His major works include "School of Nazareth" for the soul, "The Family Jewel" for married life, and "The Spirit of the Holy Family" for his orders. These writings remain a beacon for young adults seeking God's unique plan for their lives.

2004: Universal Saint

Manyanet’s life led many to seek his help. In 1984, St. John Paul II beatified him, later canonizing him in Rome on May 16, 2004. The Pope noted that his holiness was centered on Nazareth, aiming to turn every home into a sacred space where God’s love is the focus and every family reflects the Holy Family’s light.

Inspiring the Sagrada Família

Poetry in Every Arch

As a spiritual inspiration for the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Saint Joseph Manyanet helped spread devotion to the Holy Family. His vision of Nazareth as a model for every home is reflected in the beauty and symbolism of the basilica.

Spiritual Wisdom

01

It is essential to bring the Gospel to our society... To reach this goal, the most urgent priority is the Christian formation of families through a solid education.

St. J. Manyanet

02

The true pillars of spiritual life consist of self-denial, humility, avoiding personal honors, choosing to be unnoticed, preferring the last place, and doing all possible good without seeking any earthly reward.

St. J. Manyanet

03

If you have been called to a life of perfection, especially if you left the world to serve God, do not seek human praise, nor be troubled if others do not offer the esteem or attention you might naturally desire.

St. J. Manyanet
